Fibrous WKshop: Fibrous StructuresFebruary 2, 2007

Urban pavilion for Istanbul World Capital of Culture 2010. This project was initiated with a workshop involving students from London and Istanbul working under the guidance of eLS and local architect Tuspa, with the support of structural engineers Adams Kara Taylor (see page XX). The initial design concept for a "fibrous pavilion" was abstracted in a matrix containing a set of digital/physical modelling/construction techniques. Within this framework the students produced five very different families of pavilions, each capable of generating a multitude of configurations related to specific sites, timeframes and budgets. The technological specificity of the physical prototypes encouraged the involvement of a wide range of organisations, including a sponsor (Lafarge), local organisations (Arkitera), universities (ITU), the media (CNN) and art galleries.
